“Law is not a profession at all, but rather a community of mutual trust and public service.”
Welcome Colleagues and Friends,
The wisdom of Learned Hand (remember him from our law school days?) is at the core of the WCBA. I am honored and humbled to be President of a bar association with such a rich history of civility, community service, legal excellence and camaraderie. I did not realize that co-chairing the Family Law Section ten years ago would lead to this role, but each year and new position in the WCBA has led to wanting more involvement and a greater appreciation of all that our bar association has to offer. There is literally something for everyone:
- Take advantage of the free copying, printing, faxing and notary services offered in the WCBA office, along with a variety of legal resources such as Westlaw and Marginsoft.
- Join different sections to learn about substantive legal issues and network with colleagues and judges throughout the year.
- Participate in committees to plan social, pro bono and community events such as the Bench – Bar Conference, Garden for Avalon or the Bias Awareness Reception.
- Sign up for the Lawyer Referral and Information Services to provide legal assistance to the public. Those who have been practicing less than 10 years, are automatically members of the New Lawyer’s Section. There is no better way to get to know your peers and legal community.
- If you are looking for social outings, do not miss our tailgates, President Speakeasies, or annual Trivia Night and Golf Scramble. It’s not too late to sign for the upcoming golf outing on August 1st at the Lake Forest Golf Club.
- At the very least, as a member of the WCBA you can enjoy reading the Res Ipsa and your complimentary subscription to the Washtenaw County Legal News or look up fellow colleagues in our new and improved website’s member directory.
Regardless of your level of involvement, you will find collegiality. We pride ourselves in being a tight-knit community of attorneys who support each other. We recognize and honor our outstanding leaders. Our Executive Director Kyeena Slater is dedicated to the success of the WCBA and its members – thank you to her and my predecessors for their dedication and guidance. I look forward to working with Kyeena, Josie and the rest of the Board to continue our wonderful traditions and adapt to our legal community’s changing needs. I hope to see you at one of our many events in the upcoming year!
Warmly,
Shalini
