Lawyer Referral Service

Cost: $30 per referral

What’s the process?

Call 734-996-3229 and state that you need a lawyer referral. You will speak briefly and confidentially with one of our staff members about your matter to determine what type of lawyer you need. There is a $30 fee for the service which covers administrative and staffing expenses associated with the service that must be paid by credit card over the phone. We will then give you the name and contact information of the attorney. The whole process takes just a few minutes.

At the conclusion of the initial consultation, you and the lawyer have no further obligation to each other. Fees for additional services after the first half-hour are arranged between you and the lawyer.

Why do I need a Lawyer?

It’s always a good idea to check with a lawyer before you make important decisions. Whether you’re buying a house, making a business deal, or settling a dispute, a short talk with a lawyer often tells you all you need to know. After your consultation you’ll know the seriousness of your matter, how to handle it swiftly, and how to handle it correctly. A consultation with a lawyer now can save you money and aggravation down the road.

How should I prepare for my initial consultation?

  • First off, think about your matter and be prepared to clearly explain it to the lawyer.
  • Think about what you would like the outcome to be, and what you would like done.
  • Prepare a list of questions. Things to ask may be: What are possible outcomes? How long will this matter/case take? What are the expected costs?
  • Be prepared to speak up and ask for clarification if you don’t understand the lawyer’s response.

Overview

The Washtenaw County Bar Association operates a Lawyer Referral and Information Service (LRIS). The LRIS maintains a list of attorneys, categorized by practice area, who will provide 30 minutes of consultation with no further obligation.

Since its creation in 1982, the LRIS has served thousands of citizens by making referrals to local attorneys and by providing information to citizens about alternative sources of assistance.
