"Custody & Visitation Determinations in Cases of Intimate Partner Violence: New Research, Concepts and Assessment Methods"

When couples separate, the risk of intimate partner violence, abuse, harassment and homicide often continues or increases. Safety and human rights concerns in custody-visitation proceedings are gaining increased attention because professionals often do not detect abuse, do not take it seriously or apply non-legal factors in their determinations. This workshop will acquaint participants with research on characteristics and knowledge or professionals that are associated with the safety needs of both adults and children. Participants will explore alternative interpretations of case facts with the aid of new knowledge regarding the nature and impact of abuse. Practical skills and tools for detecting abuse and for assessing types of abuse and their impact, lethality risks and the best interests of the child will be presented.
